THE ISLE OF SKYE, otherwise known as the Misty Isle ('Eilean A Cheo'), is located on the north west coast of Scotland. It has become one of the most popular tourist destinations among the Scottish islands, made famous by romantic tales of its mountains, mist, sea lochs, ghosts and castles. The island is rich in legend and famed for its hospitality.

Kyleakin lies to the south east of Skye just opposite Kyle of Lochalsh on the Scottish mainland.

Saucy Mary's takes its name from the impudent Norse Princess Mary, who married Findanus Mackinnon, Lord of the Isles, around 900 AD. She allegedly had a chain laid between the mainland and the Isle of Skye to enable the levying of a toll for passing ships.

More recently, prior to the existence of the Skye Bridge, Kyleakin was a port for the ferry between Kyleakin and Kyle of Lochalsh, when “over the sea to Skye” meant exactly that.

For many years after the Bridge was built, the spirit of Saucy Mary struck again and a hefty toll was charged to cross. Thankfully, these days are long gone.

Now, side-stepped by the progress of the Skye Bridge, the village of Kyleakin has risen to the challenge of changing times. It has redesigned its harbour area as a place of recreation, where you can enjoy the atmosphere of the new - artworks commissioned as part of the regeneration process - while reflecting on the old - the words of poet Angus Peter Campbell, carved into the stone of Skye sculptress Lindsey Campbell.
